Approximately 25 kids (and a bunch of parents!) joined Valley Mountain Bikers for the First Annual Brian Hahl Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day on Sunday, October 4, 2009.
The day started with registration, which included: number plates, IMBA stickers, VMB tattoos and Clif Bars.
Registration was immediately followed by bike inspections courtesy of Rob Takacs of Fitness Central of Schnecksville and Frank Pavlick of Coaltion for Appropriate Transportation in Bethlehem.
While we waited for more kids to show up and get ready, those registered had an opportunity to check out the really cool "skills area" built earlier in the week by Bob Brien of Bike Line of Allentown and Karen. Bob and Karen provided coaching on how to approach each obstacle.
Then, the kids divided into groups with adult leaders and sweepers and headed into the woods for group rides!
After the rides, we all enjoyed lunch courtesy of Dominos Pizza, A-Treat beverages and water courtesy of QNB.
Next, we all laughed really hard as the kids lined up to see who could inflate inner-tubes (courtesy of Bike Line) to the point of explosion. The first two kid who exploded their tubes each won a Valley Mountain Bikers hat and the rest of the participants all received handlebar bells courtesy of South Mountain Cycles in Emmaus.
Next we raffled off three kids helmets and water bottles, courtesy of Bike Line of Allentown, which resulted in each kid getting something!
The events wrapped up with a unicycle demo by Miles Silfies, who impressed everyone with his amazing trials skills.
The day proved to be a huge success with big smiles and laughs for all present and was truly rewarding for all volunteers.
