I was over at Sals today doing some updating the the Spanky switchback turn. This is the first switchback you hit when you climb the Spanky. Please note this turn is now under construction and you'll have to be a little cautious when you ride through it.
This has been on the "to do" list for years, but I'm finally getting around to it cause I'm bored. Not much trailwork going on at Sals these days so I figured it was time to start a few small repair projects.
This turn was the first one of this type we designed and built(crib wall switchback) . Unfortunately it was never designed right-way too narrow and too flat on the lower approach. When these turns are too narrow you get that spot when you climb where you have to line it up just right and crank the bars around while hitting the upslope in the middle of the turn.
Alternately going downhill you have to brake hard to take this turn very slowly. So the new turn will be much wider and won't have the steep section right in the middle of the turn.
I was able to get a lot done with just a mattock and a bucket. There was a visitor from the Church of 10% Slope (or less) , but he was quickly shoo-ed away!
This pic has the old and the new lines drawn in.
