Jacobsburg Trailwork Day Update

VMB, working with the park managers and a good crew of equestrians had one of our first trail work days at Jacobsburg in years and we got a ton done. At the request of the park, we assisted the equestrians to turn their single-wide bridges into double wides, making it easier for horses to cross and less likely that users would walk or ride around them, which had created swampy areas. To help control erosion and run-off in those areas, we put in several grade reversals above and between the bridges, and did a substantial amount of deberming to help water flow across the trail. The work was done in the small island between Jacobsburg and Belfast roads where the old ranger station was. It was small but important and successful first step working with the park and other users to help maintain and improve the trails. There were donuts, coffee, a mini excavator, a flat tire, a couple kids, many laughs, and good times.

A huge thanks to JoAnn DiFrancesca and Penn Quaker construction for donating dirt another equipment, Mike Prentice for helping organize and lead the event, and all the mountain bikers and equestrians who came out to help. Steve from Saucon Valley Bikes and Curt from Curt's Cyclery in Nazareth have also been key voices in our conversations with Rob, the park manager. We had more than 20 people out for a fun, productive day. Lots of riders passed during the day and were incredibly excited to see work being done on the trails. As long as enthusiasm remains high, we'll try scheduling another work day or two as weather permits this winter and start identifying projects for the spring.
